Aimee Copeland was a graduate student at The University of Georgia in 2012 at the age of 24.
She made the decision to take a few days off that year to enjoy the last few weeks before graduation with her pals.
They made the decision to travel to a tiny lake so they could zipline over the water one day. The daring gang wanted to try it out right away.
What Aimee couldn’t have known was that that moment would change her life forever. A zipline consists of a long stretched wire that sits high up in the air, providing stunning views below. Generally, it is completely safe.
However, things went horribly wrong when Aimee’s time came around. Aimee plunged toward a cliff as the line abruptly snapped. and that day she lost her limb.
Although Aimee was brought to the hospital, the horror continued. Doctors discovered it to be much worse. The wound was infected with flesh-eating germs, and the 24-year-old was in danger of dying.
A deep wound on her leg from the fall became infected with a bacteria called Aeromonas hydrophila, which eventually resulted in necrotizing fasciitis, also known as a flesh-eating disease and considered to be life-threatening.
Aimee was able to cope with her condition after 11 surgeries and challenging rehabilitation, but she had to amputate both of her hands and both of her legs.
Aimee adjusted to her new life gradually but definitely, and four years after the accident, this image of the fighter was becoming viral on social media and inspiriting a lot of people there.
Aimee is boldly displaying her body in a bikini on the beach, complete with scars and amputations.
She wrote: “It has taken me a long time to become comfortable with and accept my new body. We are ALL made with imperfections and there is so much beauty in our flaws. The scars and skin grafting build character! It’s not about what you have — what you do with what you have is what really counts.”
Aimee Copeland is a supporter of amputee and disability rights in the year 2023, and via her public speaking engagements and social media posts, she continues to motivate others.
Aimee is working on a PhD in psychology at the University of West Georgia in addition to her advocacy activities.
