Wordle has emerged as quite an addictive game recently but it’s proving to us that it’s more than just that after potentially saving the life of an 80-year-old woman. According to Times Now News, the elderly woman, Denyse Holt, had been held hostage for 17 hours in her own home. Her daughter grew suspicious when her mother did not send her completed Wordle to her.
Holt, the resident of the Lincolnwood neighborhood in Chicago was fast asleep when a knife-wielding, naked intruder broke into her home in the middle of the night. He threatened to “cut her” if she made any loud noises or calls for help. Eventually, the intruder asked her to help warm him up in a bath before locking her in the basement bathroom of her house without any medication or food.

“I didn’t think I was going to live. I was in shock. I was trying to survive,” recalled Holt of the terrifying moment as the door of the bathroom had been barricaded with a chair. With no windows to ventilate the bathroom she was in, the woman performed exercises to keep herself warm in the chilly atmosphere. While Holt was struggling to free herself and survive her eldest daughter, Meredith Holt-Caldwell noticed that her mother had not responded to her text messages.
Moreover, the Seattle resident hadn’t even received her mother’s daily Wordle, something Holt would never miss. Thus, she tried to reach her on the landline but even that went unanswered. She called Holt’s neighbors and urged them to check up on her mother but when they arrived at her door, no one answered. However, they noticed that the elderly woman’s car was still present in the driveway.
At this point, Meredith informed the police thinking her mom might have collapsed. But when officers arrived at the location they found a broken window on the first floor and visible blood. Cops entered the home and found the victim in the basement and determined that it was a hostage situation. Thankfully, Hold was not hurt.
As officers continued their search, they found the suspect on the second floor of the home. He was armed with several knives and thus authorities had to call in more force after their initial failed arrest attempts. After much effort, they finally managed to subdue him with a stun gun through a hole in the door before taking him into custody. Cops believed that the intruder had been suffering from a mental health crisis which prompted him to do what he did.
He was transferred to a hospital for medical treatment and was charged with multiple felonies including home invasion with a dangerous weapon, aggravated kidnapping while armed with a dangerous weapon, and aggravated assault against a peace officer, reports ABC13. “I never thought in a million years that this was happening, but it was,” shared Meredith.
