A father tragically passed away after being fatally hit by an SUV on the freeway while trying to retrieve his baby’s “favorite toy.” On Thursday, Joshua Thomas Taylor was driving on I-65 south with his family when his baby threw his favorite toy out the window and onto the freeway.
The 32-year-old doting father, who was expecting his third child, went back to the area later that night to look for the toy. He parked his car at an off-ramp just before 9 p.m. and began walking along the interstate. “Tennessee Department of Transportation HELP truck drivers found Taylor and tried to talk with him,” revealed the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department in a news release according to PEOPLE.

“Taylor ran across the interstate and jumped over the jersey barrier to the northbound side. Tennessee Department of Transportation HELP truck drivers immediately began traveling to the opposite side of the interstate when they heard the collision,” it added of the moment Taylor was struck by a GMC Yukon. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver who struck Taylor reportedly remained at the scene and “did not display any indications of impairment.” Per police “speed does not appear to be a factor” in the death of Taylor who was a father to his two children: Brenna, 13, and Noble, 2. In September this year, he was also expecting his third child with his wife, Esther, according to a GoFundMe page created to support the family during this distressing time.
“Our hearts ache for the Taylor Family, especially his wife, Esther, and his two children, Brenna (13) and Noble (2). Esther is also 20 weeks pregnant with a baby boy. Please help us surround Esther with love and support during this challenging time. All money raised will go towards offsetting the costs of a memorial service as well as alleviating any financial burdens for Esther and their children,” read the page.
The fundraiser described Taylor as “a loving and dedicated husband, father, son, and friend who lived his life with passion and purpose.” It continued, “Anyone who knew him could not help but be impacted by his fervent love for Jesus and wholehearted commitment to his mission. He will be deeply missed.”
