Everyone on the aircraft, except for the baby, lost their lives after the plane came plummeting down to the ground.

The plane she was on was seconds away from crashing, but a heroic mother did not let go of her baby boy even in her final moments, as the aircraft plunged towards the ground. Everybody on board the light aircraft was killed in the crash, except for the little infant, who was found alive and breathing in the arms of his dead mother.

The tragic incident occurred on October 13, 2020, when Mayerly Diaz Rojas and her husband, Fabio Grandas were inside the HK 2335-G plane. They were accompanied by their baby, Martin, and his nanny, Nuris Maza, as reported by Mirror. Following the fatal crash that occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Ubate, Colombia, rescuers surveyed the wreckage of the plane looking for survivors. And the only surviving passenger was safely cradled in lifeless arms.

Local media reported that the mother used her own body to shield the infant and even after the plane went plummeting down, her baby survived the accident while everyone else on board lost their lives.

The child’s father, Fabio Grandas, was the one manning the plane and he is known in Bogota as a well-known doctor. His wife, Mayerly was a lawyer who specialized in telecommunications law, according to a translated version of an ABC Aeronautico report. Apart from baby Martin, the couple also reportedly had two other children who were not on board the plane that day.

The family was travelling from Santa Marta and were supposed to land at the Guaymaral airport, but the aircraft declared an emergency before the deadly accident took place. Upon investigations, authorities found the documents of engine to be in check and they are yet to find the reason that caused the crash. “According to initial information, the aeroplane had all of its technical documentation up to date,” authorities said, as quoted by The Sun.

The baby’s father, Fabio had been associated with the Civil Air Patrol for several years and was involved in humanitarian activities that help vulnerable Colombians and offer medical care to people living in remote locations of the country. However, on the day of the crash that killed him, his wife, and their son’s nanny, Fabio was not on a patrol mission, as reported by ABC Aeronautico.

After the wreckage was surveyed and the baby was found to have miraculously survived, Martin was taken to the Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota University Hospital so that doctors could ensure he was out of danger. Local reports added that the baby is stable, according to The Sun.

The Colombian Civil Aviation Authority released a statement after the incident which said, “a baby, who was also travelling in the aeroplane, is being attended at this time in an assistance centre.” Authorities also expressed their “solidarity with the families of the victims” in the statement released.

The accident that killed the three adults is another addition to the list of several plane crashes reported over the last few years in Colombia, according to Zenger. This year itself, there were two other plane crashes reported; four people were claimed as victims in one of those crashes. In the year of 2016, the country saw a major accident that killed 71 passengers in total. Onboard the flight were members of Brazil’s Chapecoense Real soccer team and after the plane hit treetops, the aircraft plummeted down and only six people came out of the incident alive.
